Nozzle Resizing

Tools/items needed:

-1/2" Male Threaded Adaptor
-Bench Pillar Drill
-Hole saw drill piece
-Standard drill pieces
-Block of wood
-Stainless Steel Woven Wire Mesh
-3mm Orange Acrylic Perspex Plastic Sheet
-Epoxy/Plastic Weld
-Silicone Rubber
-Metal Ring/Coin of some sort
-Red marker pen
-Wire cutters

Right, now here is where things really pick up, and get quite involving as well!  Just like when an action movie picks up after patiently waiting for about an hour or so.  And another thing, yeah that’s a shitload of items needed!

The one issue that I still had with the Hydro Cannon was its nozzle.  It is just a bit too big; here I am going to make it like how a CPS 2000 would shoot, so basically more of a focused beam that shoots for a bit longer than what the Hydro Cannon has been able to get so far (not very long).  If you read until the end of this then I applaud you, sadly I have nothing to give you as a reward though.  Just give yourself an approved pat on the back.

To start things off, I’m going to needing a 1/2" Threaded Male Adaptor.


Now if you do something like this and don’t want to just focus on making one big nozzle, you can buy some 1/2" threaded end caps and drill different sized holes in them for all sorts of different nozzles to choose from.  I however just want to retain the insane big nozzle, hence why we will be chopping things off.

First thing to saw off is the threaded part, so in the vice it goes and time for sawy to come out and play.


It looks messy as usual no matter how nice you saw it.  So while I would usually get the file out, since we want to flatten this part down to smoothness, I instead rubbed it across a sheet of sandpaper like so.


With most of it taken care by the sandpaper, I slightly filed the remaining uneven parts until I got a smooth enough surface.  It needs to be smooth for the new nozzle I am making for it.



Now this is where things get rather advanced.  Here is where the new nozzle is going to be cut and fitted.  This is where I will need the 3mm orange plastic sheet and the wire mesh as pictured here.


I now needed a large hole saw drill piece that was about the size to fit over the new flattened front part of the 1/2" male adaptor.  It was 1 ¼ inch size wise.  There is also a smaller drill bit inside to get an accurate hole when drilling through a surface, which is what we want on this occasion.


Next, the bench pillar drill needs to come into action.  Clamping the orange plastic down ready for the circular shape, it is time to cut.


In which I end up with this.


It is a perfect size fit over the adaptor which is what I wanted, just need to do some filing off and sanding to get rid of those burred edges.



The next thing to focus on is now making the actual sized nozzle in the newly cut piece of orange plastic.  In order to get a stable unmessy cut, a piece of wood was needed, along with some screws and a small drill piece.  With the bench pillar drill three holes were accurately cut around the orange piece like this.


Then the three screws with some soft bits of leather underneath to avoid cracking the plastic were screwed down to hold it in place ready.


Getting it ready to rock.  If I remember correctly, I used a 7/16" drill piece first.


It is promising, nice and stable cut.


I felt it just needed a little more, so I went for a 1/2" drill piece and did the same process.


It was just right for me, so I left it at that.


Fitted over the adaptor it is not the best hole line up in the world, but it’ll do!



It is now time to peel off the protective wrapping on the newly cut orange plastic nozzle piece.


Then with some sandpaper, I curled it up and smoothed out the new nozzle by sticking it through, yes, again we are still talking about water guns here and not whatever else you were thinking.


Now it is time for the interesting part, stream lamination, which means the wire mesh, is now needed.


I won’t need a lot, just a round piece that will fit through the back of the adaptor, this will be out laminator behind the nozzle, just like you see on guns like the CPS 2000.  A metal ring was used that was just the right size as the template to draw round.


With the screwdriver end holding it in place, it was drawn around with a red marker pen, this is our guideline.


I will now need to cut it out as accurate as possible.  For this I used some fine wire cutters.


To make things easier, the square around the circle was cut off.


That made it an easier job of cutting and shaping each square end to the point where I got the circle I wanted.


And it fits rather nicely into the back of the adaptor.



It is now time to stick the orange nozzle onto the smooth part of the adaptor.  In order for a nice bond with the glue, just like the adaptor, the orange nozzle piece was rubbed on a piece of sandpaper.


The result is a smooth surface ready for the glue.


I used epoxy for this, something called plastic weld, will do the job fine.


After mixing the epoxy so it is fully ready, an even amount as possible was placed all over the nozzle piece.  You don’t want big fat globs as then it’ll get messy when it makes contact, and getting glue off your skin is like a dog chasing its own tail.


With it facing towards the adaptor on the flat surface, the adaptor was carefully and evenly placed over the glued nozzle piece.


It was then put in a vice to properly secure itself, where I left it overnight.


It is now starting to take shape, chances are a little bit of water will still leak out of the sides over the area between where the new nozzle has been fitted, don’t fret, that will be dealt with in the next area of the mod.


The next and final part of this chapter is fitting the newly made mesh screen behind the nozzle.


Sadly, badly smelling silicone rubber is back I’m afraid, I will be putting some all around the inside of the adaptor as this will be holding the mesh in.


With some small pliers the mesh screen was carefully fitted in, attaching to the silicone rubber, nice and flat.


I left it dry and rid the smell, and the end result is looking promising.


And that’s the end of that chapter!  That was like a never ending story!  The next part is where this newly made nozzle will be getting fitted onto the blaster, so still more interesting parts to come!
